A state district judge last month awarded the District Attorney’s Office and Brownsville Police Department $640,040 seized from a Matamoros resident attempting to smuggle the money into Mexico.

Local law enforcement, with the assistance of DEA and FBI, made the seizure in October after Roberto Gonzalez-Diaz,44, attempted to smuggle the cash into Mexico via the B & M International Bridge.Gonzalez-Diaz was followed by law enforcement after he changed his direction of travel to avoid being checked at the international bridge.

Gonzalez-Diaz was subsequently approached by law enforcement, and he provided consent to search his vehicle. Gonzalez admitted to being paid $200 to smuggle 53 bundles of U.S. currency into Matamoros. His vehicle was then driven to the City of Brownsville Mechanic Shop where the 53 bundles were found hidden inside the gas tank.
