State Senator wants changes to VA practices
MCALLEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A Lieutenant Governor candidate has a plan to benefit military veterans.
State Senator Leticia Van De Putte spoke to a room full of veterans Friday in McAllen. She spoke about making education more accessible for military members, and offering counseling to their families.
Currently, Rio Grande Valley veterans have to travel to San Antonio to the Veterans Affairs Hospital for many services. Van De Putte wants some of those services available in the Valley.
"Until the federal government and the VA puts a priority on this area of the country and builds a full veterans hospital, they need to have the ability to contract that out to add more services, to have more providers," Van De Putte said. "Particularly those in the sub-specialties."
Van De Putte will face off against fellow state senator Dan Patrick this fall for the the Lieutenant Governor's office.
