RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — The drought outlook for 2013 is getting worse and a growing list of Texas leaders are now demanding that Mexico release more water into the Rio Grande river.
State Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, and commissioner of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Carlos Rubinstein, made a plea to federal officials, asking them to intervene.
They want President Obama and State Department officials to compel Mexico to release water to the U.S., citing a stipulation in the 1944 water treaty act. Texas leaders warn several communities in the state could run out of water this summer.
