Here in the Lone Star State right under 200,000 reports of family violence from 2009-2010 were reported, with 111 women dying at the hands of their abuser.
“In Cameron County in 2010 we had 3,538 family violence incidents,” said Claudia Cerda, of Friendship of Women, Inc.
Friendship of Women, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that houses victims of domestic abuse here in southern Cameron County. They take in women escaping abuse of all kinds, from physical to verbal, sexual and even psychological.
Their agency personally counciled and housed over 15-hundred women and children last year who were seeking safe haven from their abusers.
Their efforts go beyond helping victims after they've been abused, but also works ahead of time to educate the community on domestic violence issues in hopes of getting the ever fluctuating numbers down. One of their main areas of concern is violence against women.
On Saturday May 14th Friendship of Women, Inc is hosting a White Ribbon Pledge Drive at Linear Park (1338 E. 8th st.) in Brownsville from 9am-12pm.
Entire families are invited to attend, but event organizers say the White Ribbon campaign is geared towards boys and men.
Each male will write a personal pledge vowing to never hurt a woman and not to turn the other way if they know one is being abused.
This type of event is just one of many scheduled for this year through Friendship of Women, Inc.
