BROWNSVILLE - A 5 year-old student at St. Mary's Catholic school for bringing a loaded gun to class.

The student was showing a .32 caliber handgun to a classmate when a teacher noticed what was going on. According to a police report, the student's father, Noe Cruz, admitted that he had placed the gun in his son's backpack the night before. His reasoning for placing it in the backpack is unclear, but Cruz has had several run ins with law enforcement including robbery and aggravated robbery.

Brownsville Police Department Information Officer J.J. Trevino stated, "Parents are not aware of what their kids are taking to school, this is one of the things that can happen. Obviously if you own a handgun and you have it in your residence, something to consider very strongly is the fact that you need to secure that weapon." Cruz was charged with child endangerment and unlawful possession of a handgun by a felon.
