Since more than half the country is suffering from continuing frigid temperatures and brutal weather conditions, it's not surprising that thousand of college students will be coming to South Padre Island for Spring Break as early as next week.

"The really busy and chaotic time for us starts on the eighth of March is Texas Week as we call it," said City of South Padre Island special events coordinator Mary Kay Hancock. "And Texas Week, not only is every school in Texas out, but major universities throughout the Midwest, there's quite a big selection of those as well."

Hancock also stressed that spring break on the Island is also family oriented, and some places only cater to families.

Some of the new additions this spring break will be fireworks that will be launched from various hotels on the beach and a vibrant music scene.

"We'll also have nighttime events at the Clayton's Beach Bar event center," said Hancock. "He will have concerts there every night during Texas week and some concerts the week to follow. Louie's Backyard will have guest DJs and concerts."

And in addition to spring break being all about having a good time, it's also economically beneficial to the island.

"Spring break helps our local economy," said Hancock. "It's a huge boost to our economy. It's second only to July, which is our biggest visitor month in the summer, so everyone here, all the businesses, depend greatly on spring break."
