SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — They're the voice of all helpless and homeless animals. And now the Friends of Animal Rescue on South Padre Island has added something new to their recovery center.
Their first goal is to reunite animals with their owners as quick as possible.
"We're a 24 hour hotline to where anybody can call us at any time of the day if their animal gets out or gets lost or somebody finds the animal on the street they let us know an animal is found. And also for visitors, being such a visitors’ island and if someone loses an animal over the weekend we get notified of it right away and you don't have to wait until the Port Isabel shelter is open , we get on it as soon as we get the call," says Friends of Animal Rescue Manager, Sherry Pindard.
Some animals had to make a trip across the causeway for quarantine purposes at the Port Isabel shelter. But now, as of earlier this week, that will change. The Friends of Animal Rescue Recovery Center has been approved to operate a quarantine room, keeping these animals closer to home.
The center operates on a small budget; they receive about 20-thousand a year from the city and work off donations for the other money needed to run the program.
In front of the recovery center is a resale shop and all the profit made from the items up there go to the animals in the back of the store.
While there may not look like many animals are housed here, that's cause they’re not. Dozens of other four legged furry friends are in foster homes. The center, which is a no kill shelter, stays pretty busy with new residents.
"There are animals in Brownsville and in Harlingen and other locations where they'll be like on death row and we'll be notified and we'll pull them from those facilities and they will go into our foster programs," says Pindard.
Right now about 70 animals, between the center and foster care, are waiting to find “furever” homes.
This weekend at Bike Fest on the island, Friends of Animal Rescue will be holding a Hog Wash fundraiser. It'll be from 11-3 at Padre Sunset on Padre Blvd. All money raised goes to the center and its four legged residents.
