In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Texas Highways magazine announced another round of the Texas Top 40 favorite destinations as chosen by its readers.

The announcement places Padre Island (North and South) at No. 19 and Abilene at No. 18. Also making the Top 40 list were McKinney at No. 17 and Canyon at No.16.

The June issue of Texas Highways is the annual coastal issue and this year it promises the best sand, sun, colors and cuisine. From food on the boardwalk in Kemah to artistic penguins at Moody Gardens, to alligators in Beaumont and seafood at Dirty Al’s in Port Isabel, this issue delivers the best the coast has to offer.

Foodies will love “What’s Cookin’ in Port A” by Celestina Blok with photos by Will Van Overbeek. Insiders tip: If you plan to go to Shell’s, the local favorite with just nine tables, plan to arrive early enough to try the blackboard special, it sells out quickly!

Matt Joyce’s story on Rockport-Fulton will inspire readers to get outdoors, especially those interested in ecotourism. Long ago, Native Americans in the area survived on fish, oysters, game and berries. According to Captain Jay Tarkington of the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, the Copanes Indians were the original “Winter Texans.”

Subscribers will begin receiving the new issue on May 8; the digital edition will be released on May 11; and the hard-copy issue will go on sale May 15 at hundreds of newsstands statewide, including H-E-B, Target, Walmart, Randall’s and Barnes & Noble.
