SPI Sea Turtles To Gain New Shelter

Sea Turtle Inc. in South Padre Island is looking to expand. The company purchased five acres of land last month in an effort to shelter and care for more endangered turtles.

“This is a way we can give back to the community,” says Jeff George of Sea Turtle Inc. “We have been growing and can no longer handle the amount of people and turtles so we have been looking to expand for five to six years now.”

The land was purchased through donations and contributions from visitors and tourists.

“There will be museum displays, a larger gift shop, some classrooms and an amphitheater suitable for 300 people,” says George.

The plan would double the size of the facility and would allow for twice as many turtles to be treated. George says no timetable has been set for when the groundbreaking will begin but the process will be gradual.

“I think what the public is going to see is a phased expansion,” says George. “One of the components to helping an endangered species recover is that the public has to want to support them.”

This new land and facility is just one piece of the puzzle in the effort to achieve that goal.
