BROWNSVILLE, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Today, Boca Chica Beach has been officially announced as the first commercial launching site in the country.
Space-X founder Elon Musk says the plan is to launch its signature rocket -- The Falcon 9.
Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez says we can expect to see new developments coming to the area very soon.
Mayor Tony Martinez, "From what I understand, they're going to move forward very quickly. They may even start moving some dirt in the next week or so."
The Brownsville Economic Development Council says the project is expected to bring 500 jobs and $50 million in salaries to the economy.
County Judge Carlos Cascos says he first discussed this project with Governor Rick Perry two years ago.
Carlos Cascos, Cameron County Judge, "he tells me, he said, 'hey off the record, they're going. They're going and I want to be there for the ground breaking. I want to be there because this is probably the most important initiative, not only for south Texas, but for the state as well.'"
Now that Space-X will be underway, city officials say they see the potential for more projects to come to Cameron County. Even as soon as this year.
Gilbert Salina, BEDC Executive Vice President, "We hope to make an announcement here in the next couple of months on another project of the same scope, size, magnitude, and the effect that it will have in this area."
Boca Chica Beach is five miles south of South Padre Island and 17 miles away from the International Airport.
