Fifty of the state’s best and brightest high school students will call the Rio Grande Valley their home for a week when they participate in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-based (STEM) Mission Accomplished Residential Summer (MARS) Camp August 4th through the 9th at South Texas College.

STC was awarded a Texas Workforce Commission-Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy grant for $87,469 to conduct the one-week residential MARS Camp that will focus on STEM and concentrate on Aerospace, Energy and Defense.

The 50 high school students from around Texas that will participate in the MARS Camp are winners of the 2013 ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair, and include 15 teachers who mentored the winning students.

During the camp, students will be exposed to a curriculum of topics that include math, computer science, physics, engineering, reading and writing. The classroom component will be supplemented with two projects that involve bottle rocket design and solar energy, and include site visits of the state-of-the-art United Launch Alliance, wind turbine and armed forces facilities.
