Woman reunites with Coast Guard rescuer who saved her life decades ago. Her brother was killed in the same incident. Janae Frazier reports.
(WECT) Cindi Vance was 12-years-old when she was caught in an undertow at North Carolina's Yaupon Beach on July 3, 1970. Vance was trying to save her younger brother Charles Gregory, but couldn't.
"I think of my brother every single day," Vance said through tears. "And when I think of him of course I'm reminded that not only did I try to rescue him, but other people tried to rescue him."
Unfortunately, Gregory drowned, but two Coast Guardsmen were able to save Vance.
Vance has been looking for her rescuers for decades, but was finally able to track them down through the help of a genealogist.
After years of searching, Vance discovered Petty Officer 1st Class David E. O'Neal and Petty Officer 1st Class Ronald D. Savage were the men that saved her.
