Soldier Surprises Son
Soldier returning from Afghanistan surprises his son at school.
A Virginia 4th grader got the surprise of his life on Thursday.
10-year old Dominic Matthews thought he was sitting down for a typical lunch inside W.E. Cundiff Elementary School, but his father, Virginia National Guard Sergeant Deon Matthews, was waiting right outside.
"He hasn't seen me in awhile so I'm pretty excited. He gets excited as well. I can't wait to see his face because he does not know that I'm home" said Sgt. Matthews.
His Afghanistan deployment ended more than three months early because their mission was complete.
"I'm an IT guy, so I wasn't in any major danger, but just being over there is enough" he said.
The last time the father and son saw each other was May 14, 2011.
On Thursday the two were reunited as Sgt. Matthews walked up behind his son, leaned over and asked "Can I have some of that lunch?"
The 10-year old's face said it all.
He was surprised when he realized his father was behind him and exclaimed "Dad!" with a big smile.
"Since I haven't seen him, I was really hoping he could get off and come home for the holidays but I'm just really glad that he came home at least early. I missed him a lot and I'm really glad that he's home" said Dominic.
"He's a lot taller, a lot taller than I remember, but still the same kid" said Sgt. Matthews as he laughed.
The two left the school and picked up Dominic's older brother Nathan so the three could spend time together.
Sgt. Matthews will be home for more than a week before he goes back to Camp Shelby for more training and paperwork.
