(KVLY) Ada, Minnesota's Stacy Scheving loves animals.

While looking at the Polk Co. Humane Society in Crookston for a cat for her daughter, she noticed a notch in one of the cat's ears and thought it had fallen victim to frostbite.

When she found out that the shelter uses the notches to mark cats that have been spayed or neutered, she was concerned.

Shelter founder Mary Solberg says the practice is fairly common, and is a humane way to prevent animals from undergoing unnecessary surgery.

"Nobody wants to undergo surgery twice for the same thing," says Solberg.
