A drug smuggler went before a judge on Friday after La Joya police stopped his smuggling operation on Friday morning.

Santiago Ramos Mendoza and eight other suspects were trying to transport 500 pounds of marijuana from Havana, but was tipped off by an anonymous tip to police. The other suspects were able to flee back into Mexico while Mendoza took police on a high speed chase on FM 2221. A Homeland Security chopper was called in to help the police stop the van and after a short pursuit police were able to apprehend Mendoza.

Mendoza has one charge against him for possession of marijuana and his bail was set at $1 million dollars and another charge for evading arrest.
