Shock And Sadness
Bizarre shooting leaves police officer and suspected gunman dead at Virginia Tech.
Several tense hours on the Virginia Tech campus have turned into shock and sadness.
It was just after midday when Virginia Tech police officer Deriek Crouse pulled over a driver
in a campus parking lot.
Witnesses told police that another man walked up and shot the officer and then ran toward a nearby building.
Later, police observed a suspicious man in a different campus parking lot about a quarter mile away from the shooting scene.
"Upon returning to that area to make contact with the subject, the officer found him deceased of gun shot wound," said Virginia Tech Police Department Deputy Chief Major Gene Deisinger.
Investigators say the campus and community are secure.
Officer Crouse had been in the patrol division at Virginia Tech for four years.
He is survived by his wife and five children and step-children.
