Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño says it's an on going problem, we are talking about trafficking and crimes which are related to drugs.

Sheriff Lupe Treviño says, "We're only capturing 10-15% of what is going through, so when I say there has to be a better way, I mean there really has to be a better way to fight this."

Treviño says he's not giving up when it comes the fight against drugs, which is something law enforcement agencies spend a lot of money on.

"We have put billions and billions of dollars into the fight against drugs and we are just barely threading water, the thing is we are not going to give up, you can't just put your hands up and dig your head in a hole of sand and ignore it." Said Treviño.

Treviño says his department will continue to tackle ways to reduce drug related crimes, he also says it's important to address the demand problem and believes it's crucial our youth be educated.

"And the answer is awareness and education with our children, especially the very young children." Said Treviño.

Meanwhile, the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department will be receiving $1.2 million dollars in state and federal grants to enhance border security efforts in our area.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department will also be receiving additional sky towers and four black Expeditions.
