For the majority of the children who live in this neighborhood, this is the only gift they'll receive this holiday season. Families tell us they simply don't have the means to shop for their entire family this year.
These families were not expecting authorities, much less the Sheriff of Cameron County, to drive up with hundreds of wrapped toys for the kids and turkeys for the moms.
For Sheriff, Omar Lucio, giving to the needy in his county is much more rewarding than to receive any gift. What he enjoys the most is to see the smiles on the kids' faces when Santa gives them what they've been waiting for all year long, a Christmas present to put under their Christmas tree.
The Sheriff, along with Santa and other deputies went door to door giving away presents and food for the family all morning long. They prepared for this day months in advance. The sheriff's department collected 500 toys this year and with the help of four female inmates, those toys were wrapped just in time for today's big day. This is the 13th annual toy drive and Sheriff Lucio says there will be more to come.
