Sharyland ISD approves new drug testing policy
SHARYLAND, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — After a close 4 to 3 vote, Sharyland school board members agreed to pass a new drug testing policy in it's schools.
The program involved students in 7th through 12th grades, in extracurricular activities, to be drug tested and it is expected to be in place within four to six weeks.
The policy had been considered for more than a decade, but this year it was decided that substance abuse in schools needed to be addressed.
Sharyland Superintendent Dr. Virginia Richter commented, "The mix of board members that we have this year, the members that we do have on the board have decided it's an important enough issue in our district and really within the whole Valley. The amount of drugs and stuff, that are available to our students, because of the proximity to the border, that it's time to take a stand and let's move forward and get help to t he students that may have an addiction program."
