Senator Lucio Jr. files tax bill on sodas to fight obesity
AUSTIN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — On Friday, March 22, Senator Lucio Jr. (D-Brownsville) filed a bill imposing a fee on soda manufacturers to help fight obesity and increase state revenue.
Senate Bill 493 would impose a one penny per ounce fee on soda by placing the tax on the manufacturer, not the consumer, and making collection of revenue easier.
Creating a statewide tax on soda could bring in $1.1 billion in revenue for 2014 and 2015 and aid in curbing the obesity problem. The State of Texas is the tenth most obese state in the nation and obesity acutely affects a high number of residents in the Valley.
Senate Bill 493 has been referred to the Senate Finance Committee.
