Senate Bill 89 Passes for Summer Food Program
Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. was at the Laguna Vista Public Library on Thursday celebrating the passage of Senate Bill 89 which will expand the summer food program for children in Texas.
The bill, authored by Senator Lucio Jr., requires all school districts to offer summer food service if they have a majority of students that qualify for free or reduced price meals. It also requires that the food service be offered for a minimum of 30 days during the summer break. Schools or alternative sites participating in the program will receive a fully funded federal reimbursement for each meal served.
Under Senate Bill 89, school districts still have the same ability to waive out of service if they can't afford to provide meals. If transportation is too difficult or if they experience other extenuating circumstances.
