Seat belt violation leads to charge of escaping from custody

A driver, pulled over for a sea tbelt violation, is arrested after kicking out the backdoor of a police unit and attempting to escape custody.

On Thursday, July 11, in the early morning hours, a Harlingen police officer conducted a traffic stop, for failing to wear a seatbelt, on the driver of a 2000 silver Ford Mustang at the intersection of Sam Houston and South 77 Sunshine Strip.

The driver was identified as Micky Don Owens, 25, the officer searched and arrested Owens, after finding a small amount of marijuana and cocaine in this pant pocket, then placed him into the backseat of the patrol unit.

As the officer then began searching the vehicle, Owens kicked the door of the unit until it opened, ran into the Arroyo, in an attempt to escape, but was found hiding in the brush covered in mud and still handcuffed.

Owens was charged with escape while arrested, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and no seatbelt.
