U.S. Customs and Border Patrol have given up on the search for Victor Chavez who escaped from a federal building in McAllen on Monday.

Chavez was being prepared to be tried for charges on illegally entering the U.S. and human smuggling. Custom officials say Chavez was unrestrained when he escaped and after hours of searching the area with no sign of Chavez the search was called off.

Chavez's name and information has been registered with the National Crime Information Center so if he turns up in any other part of the country law enforcement will be notified that he is a wanted fugitive. CBP is currently conducting an internal investigation to find out how Chavez managed to escape.
