Four people accused of running a cockfighting operation are in jail.

Hidalgo County investigators say one of the men, Bobby Jones, has a history of cockfighting offenses. The group also includes a father-daughter pair from San Juan.

They are accused of running a cockfighting ring out of a warehouse Edinburg. Their charges include cruelty to animals and criminal activity.

They say they were merely conducting scientific research.

"I have not seen any documentation, I haven't seen any research studies, I haven't seen anything to substantiate him saying that that is his motive," Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said. "I think it's pretty obvious that you don't charge at the door to a hundred spectators to view a medical experiment."

"It's just an unfortunate situation, the research that we're going to embark on could save millions of lives," Jones said in court.

Treviño said gambling charges were not included because it involves getting more difficult evidence.
