A suspected car thief causes a middle and a high school to be on lockdown. The man is still on the loose tonight but the car police say he stole is back with the owner.

It all happened around 7:30 this morning when police say a man stole a 1996 Ford Taurus from a residence in McAllen.

According to McAllen Police Spokesperson, Joel Morales, the thief was found at La Vista Park, which is near two schools, McAllen Memorial High School and Cathey Middle School. A police officer who located the car approached the driver and questioned him, and then the suspect ran on foot.

“He ran from the officer. The officer pursued the man on foot and lost him.”

The schools locked down for more than an hour. All students were kept inside for their safety. The school district beefed up their patrol after today's incident. 12 additional McAllen ISD Police Officers were stationed at both schools for extra security.

If anyone has information on this theft, you're asked to call McAllen Crime Stoppers at: 687-8477.
