Schlitterbahn Waterpark in South Padre Island is constructing a new 30 million dollar resort just next door.

"This is a project we've been working on for a couple of years now," said Schlitterbahn Director of Marketing and Sales, Mike Bigelow.

Construction on the new waterpark hotel started a couple months ago and will soon be completed.

"We're shooting for mid-summer," said Bigelow.

The new expansion is located just north of Schlitterbahn Waterpark at the former location of the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort.

"Over my shoulder here, you see the 6 story, that's one of the two buildings here on the property.  The 6 story tower and where we are here, is on top of the 5th floor."

The 221 room beach front resort hotel features year-round waterpark aspects.

"Resort guests will have access through the entire length of their stay to both of the resort amenities as well at Schlitterbahn park."

Price per room has not yet been determined, however Bigelow says the price will be comperable to other full service hotels on the island.

"There will be onsite waterslides, dry elements, a carousel, free onsite parking, beach access amenities, etc."

There will even be a multi-level, family oriented game center.

Once the construction is complete, Bigelow says the expansion will generate millions of dollars and offer hundreds of jobs.

"Everything from entry level seasonal positions for cashiers and lifeguards, assistant positions, front desk help, hotel cleaning crew, etc…all the way up to year round, full time positions."

Schlitterbahn is currently closed for winter break, but will re-open april 21st.
