SAN JUAN, TX ( KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — San Juan Police are still investigating an attempted murder-suicide involving a man who allegedly stabbed his soon-to-be ex-wife 24 times.
"It was a bloody crime scene," said Chief Juan Gonzalez.
This was the case early Sunday morning on the 1500 block of Scotty Street when a woman was allegedly stabbed 24 times by her husband over what is believed to be a divorce argument.
San Juan Police were called in just before 2:30 a.m. to find the 29-year-old victim, Joanna Estrada, in the front yard with multiple stab wounds. The suspect, Jose Canamar, allegedly ran to the back of the house and stabbed himself multiple times in the neck.
"Eventually he confronted the officers with an attempt for the officers--he said in Spanish multiple times that he wanted to die, he wanted the officers to kill him," Gonzalez stated. "We deployed a taser on him and we were able to control him and take him into custody."
Estrada is in the hospital in serious condition, but her cousin tells Newscenter 23 that she is awake and doing well. Estrada's 10-year-old daughter was at the scene at the time of the attack; she is now in the care of relatives.
Police tell us that there was no restraining order filed against Canamar, but the victim is said to have filed for divorce because her estranged husband was abusive.
"Even though there's no violence that's been reported to us, the mere fact that he went out there and showed this rage of violence toward her, more than likely she had been going through something," said Gonzalez.
The acts of one heroic man are being attributed to saving the victim's life. Upon witnessing the attack, police say the next door neighbor ran out with his machete and started yelling at Canamar, causing him to back away from Estrada and flee to the back of the house.
"We're very fortunate that the neighbor intervened," Gonzalez stated. "If it was not for the neighbor, more than likely the subject would have killed the victim."
Canamar is also in the hospital in serious condition from his injuries. He is at a separate hospital from Estrada and is being guarded. He is facing attempted murder charges as well as resisting arrest.
