San Benito patrol cars are in need of being updated according to City Manager Manuel Lara, “I was surprised by the age of some of the vehicles and we are taking some corrective action to address those needs.”

Of the 18 patrol cars that the city owns, there are currently only four cars with less than 130,000 miles on them. The San Benito Police Department received three new trucks in 2009, which are the newest patrol vehicles on the fleet.

Lara has been working with San Benito Police Chief George Gomez to help sort out the issue.

“We are dependent that they will advise us when vehicles are giving us a lot of mechanical problems,” says Lara. “Usually the process is to go through the chief of police and then he brings the needs to my attention.”

Lara says that financing newer patrol cars is an option under consideration and he is also willing to revisit the annual budget.

“We are going to make every effort to bring in some patrol cars this year,” says Lara.

Until Lara finds room in the budget there are plans to decrease the use of older patrol vehicles. A method Lara hopes to prove helpful until newer models can be installed.
