A crowd gathered in the Rio Grande Valley on Thursday, to get a look at the newest addition to the area. The first Sam's Club in Harlingen's history opened at 8 A.M.

Many people are hoping is an injection of money into the area's economy. 185 new jobs have been created.

"I was working a part time job trying to make ends meet. I got this opportunity at Sam's Club. I got a full time position. It helped me out financially, so i'm better off. I'm in a better place here at Sam's Club, " said Sam's Club employee Jason Ledesma.

Hundreds of people people crowded into the store for the grand opening.

"I just wanted to see what's going on. I'm the early bird. I like to be the first at everything," said shopper Jim Alvarez. He came to the store to see what the big deal is about. At 136,000 square feet of pure shopping goodness (including an optical center, hearing center, gas station, and pharmacy), there is a lot for him to see.

"A big shopping area like this is a good thing. You can pick up everything you need at one time and that's it." said Alvarez.

Alvarez came to the store to shop and inject money into the local economy, yet save money as well by buying in bulk.

"Instead of buying every other month, I can buy it all at once and save some money," said Alvarez. But Alvarez has to admit, he does have a hidden agenda. "Being here is like being a young boy with new toys. There's a lot of toys that I like. I'm going to end up spending more money than I really wanted, but its worth it," said Alvarez.

A person still has to have a membership to shop at Sam's Club, whether they are in Harlingen, Brownsville, and Mcallen stores. However, you don't have to own a membership to use the pharmacy..

Sam's Club is owned and operated by Walmart.
