Mercedes Donuts and Valley Donuts, in conjunction with the McAllen office of the Salvation Army, will take part in National Donut Day by giving away one free glazed donut to customers on Friday, June 6th, while supplies of glazed donuts last.

“This is the second year that we’re partnering with the Salvation Army and celebrating National Donut Day by giving away a free glazed donut to anyone who walks into our shops. This something new to people in South Texas, but many donut shops in the Midwest and Northern areas of the country celebrate this fun and tasty event,” said Mercedes Donuts and Valley Donuts owner Arnoldo Mata. “Last year, we decided we wanted to do something using it as a way to publicize our shops. We beleive that we should give back to our community, so we decided to partner with the Salvation Army to help them raise funds for their programs. We will match penny for penny, dollar for dollar, the amount of money our customers donate on that day to the Salvation Army.”

In 1938, the Chicago branch of The Salvation Army celebrated the first National Donut Day as a way to raise money during the Great Depression and honor the work of the "donut lassies" who served donuts to American soldiers during World War I. Since that time, many donut shops in the Northeast have partnered with The Salvation Army on National Donut Day to help raise needed funds for the organization’s services and programs.
