ROMA, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Roma's Orly Solis is kind of a big deal around town.
The senior running back broke a Rio Grande Valley record in week two against Cigarroa, rushing for 460 yards and five touchdowns. His game broke the previous record of 431 yards.
"Sometimes you don't realize he's have a big game, because he just breaks off long runs," By the time you know it, at the end of the game, he's got 460 yards. It's a new record in the Valley, and it's a tremendous thing to be a part of."
The second-team all-state selection in 2012 was awarded with the Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week Award for his efforts.
"It's a special award to me, it's something that i'll carry on for the rest of my life," Solis said.
Solis earned attention for the award off the field as well. He maintains a 3.3 GPA and during the summer months, he volunteers at the LaRosita Fire Department.
Befitting his team and community-first attitude, he said he found out about his record and gawdy yard total after the game.
"I never thought of 460 yards or anything, because I never keep track of why we're running and at the end I just found out. 460," Solis said.
Solis doesn't know where he will go to school next year, just that he wants to be a registered nurse and he wants to play football.
