After losing half a dozen volunteer firefighters last week, Rio Hondo's fire department is actively recruiting to fill those positions.

Firefighters walked off the job one day after Chief Sam Martinez was fired because City Commissioners say he had not reported a second job he held since 1992. Acting Fire Chief Henry Pena says the department will continue to respond to emergencies and will be assisted by Harlingen, San Benito, Los Fresnos and Arroyo City if needed.
