A Cameron County jury has found a Rio Hondo man guilty of murder involving a high speed chase with police.

Eric Christopher Gonzalez, 34, was sentenced to 50 years in prison in the murder of Maria D. Osornio, 44, who was a passenger in another vehicle.

Back in March of 2011 Harlingen police attempted to stop Gonzalez on a traffic violation, but instead Gonzalez lead police in a high speed chase.

The chase ended when Gonzalez ran a red light, at the intersection of Ed Carey and Highway 77 and striking the victim's vehicle.

Maria D. Osornio, 44, was sitting on the passenger side while her husband Javier Osornio, 50, was driving.

Osornio was pronounced dead at the hospital while her husband sustained major injuries.

Gonzalez was also found guilty of  Aggravated assault, evading arrest and possession of marijuana.

Gonzalez’s wife, Nydia, was a passenger in the vehicle with him during the high-speed chase and she will also be tried for murder.
