A Rio Grande City man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for transporting meth.

U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos sentenced Pedro Guerra-Ruiz, 34, to 15 years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty for possession with intent to distribute over 3 pounds of methamphetamine.

Guerra was arrested on February 1, 2013 at the Border Patrol checkpoint in Sarita as a passenger on an El Expresso bus.

Agents conducted an immigration inspection of the passengers and searched a backpack Guerra was carrying. Inside the backpack agents spotted a altered shampoo bottle and a K-9 dog alerted the agents to the presence of narcotics inside the bottle.

The substance was tested and confirmed to be meth, Guerra admitted to agreeing to transport the drug to Houston for $1000.
