BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — When you're a first responder on duty, body armor can be a lifesaver. And if you're a Valley resident - fear not: the law enforcement officeres of the Rio Grande Valley are fully equipped with the best:
“Here what we have is called a III-A, which is one of the best, okay? In other words, supposedly, it would stop like a .357 shot or a 9 millimeter or 45 shot or something of that nature. That’s what the regular officers wear.”
But, there is a difference between the vests regular officers wear and those that SWAT team members wear:
“They wear a special type of body armor because it has a plate on that particular body armor.”
This plate serves as a hyper-protective shield for the SWAT team because they are typically the first responders who wind up in dire, life-threatening situations, like shoot-outs. But in keeping up-to-date with the best vests the market has to offer, they obviously do not run cheap.
While a normal officer’s vest typically cost $600, a SWAT team member’s can be as costly as $1500.
Fortunately, there is a five-year warranty for the vests and the county covers the cost. Sheriff Lucio says that the high prices are 100 percent worth it because a life is something you cannot put a price on.
