This weekend marks 41 years that the RGV Ballet is performing the classing showing of "The Nutcracker" here in the Valley, and one woman has spent nearly all of that time working to continue that streak.

It's one of the most iconic performances of the holiday season, but for RGV Ballet's artistic director Deborah Case, "The Nutcracker" is more than just a show--it's 36 years of devotion to bring the longest running production of the play to the Valley.

Case first joined the company as a dancer in 1977 and took over as artistic director in 1993.  She begins planning for the show as early as June to get everything ready before the curtain rises in December.

"It's an exciting time for me," said Case.  "It's not a time that I go in like 'oh no here we go again.'  It's always I just jump right in there and start.  It's what I do, it's what I wanna do, it's what I love to do."

The performers move gracefully and seem to dance effortlessly on stage, but there's a lot of training and dedication that goes into such a flawless display of talent.

"It's very difficult," Case explained.  "The dancers literally train five days a week, an hour and a half at a time.  That's class.  And then of course we have rehearsal on the weekends."

Brittany Garza is one of the lead characters in the ballet and has been performing in "The Nutcracker" since she was just three years old.

"Playing a new role every year is always exciting and fun," Garza said.  "It keeps things interesting and portraying the character, taking it on and just going on stage and performing is just a blast."

After decades of working to bring this classic performance to the Valley, Case plans on doing this for many more years to come.

"We're here for the Valley.  And as long as the valley supports us with their attendance and fundraising, that's just, that means everything to me.  That's what keeps me going."
