A couple and two young girls riding in a van plunged into a water-filled canal. It was 1 ½-hour search for the body of 31-year-old McAllen resident, Juan Cruz. McAllen Spokesman, Joel Morales, says nearby residents who helped in last night's rescue saw Cruz when he was helping one of the girls in the canal who was trapped in the van. Police say when they found Cruz, he was already dead.
“They saw him trying to get one child out. Citizens helped as many as they could. They also had to be helped out of the canal.”
Thursday night’s accident happened on Bentsen Road, North of Pecan Boulevard. Fire officials say the van was headed Northbound when Cruz swerved to avoid another car, but lost control of the van on the bridge and plunged into the water-filled canal.
“It’s too dangerous. If there are two trucks, you won't fit. Two cars barely fit.”
The woman and both children were taken to a nearby hospital but police say all three are in stable condition.
