Republican Jobs Bill

Friday, October 14, 2011 - 10:59am

Republicans present their jobs bill.

With a brand new a free trade agreement, today President Obama takes South Korea’s President to a Michigan general motors plant that's making a car designed in korea – 7,500 people working on it. "KORUS FTA is going to create a lot of good, decent jobs for the people of America," said South Korean President Lee Myung-bak through a translator

The White House says free trade will create 250,000 jobs.

Senate Republicans killed the President's jobs bill this week, and have introduced their own, focusing on a tax overhaul, oil drilling and fewer government regulations. The Republican jobs plan would also repeal the new health law. "We think our package can create over five million jobs. We are ready to discuss it with the President," said Senator Rand Paul, (R) Kentucky.

House speaker John Boehner already did, by phone yesterday. He says Republicans will consider spending money on infrastructure in a "fiscally responsible way." "I would hope that the President would give our plan the same consideration," said House Speaker John Boehner, (R) Ohio.

Democrats insist tax cuts won't work. "If that in fact were the case, the Bush tax cuts would have put this country on an economic machine that could never have been driven so fast," said Senate Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid, (D-NV).

Congress is now under real pressure from states to create more jobs, and keep jobs from being lost. "We need to keep our teachers employed and in the classroom," said Governor Martin O'Malley, (D) Maryland.
