RIO GRANDE VALLEY - Law enforcement officials say domestic violence cases tend to increase during the Holidays and just this week Brownsville police have arrested two individuals.
Benito Alvarado was arrested after he threatened his common law wife with a knife after she refused to have sex with him. In Harlingen, Joshua Garcia was arrested after pulling two knives and lunged at his sister threatening to kill her. Police say it's not uncommon to see a spike in domestic violence calls during the Holidays. Police Officer Ted Torres says, "Domestic violence calls are on the rise in particular with New Year's Eve, that's going to be our busiest day for family violence calls, traditionally. We need to keep in mind that domestic violence does not end during the Holiday's, it just rises.'
Officer Torres says financial stress during the season and alcohol consumption plays a role in the rise in domestic calls during this time of the year.
