MCALLEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The candidates for Hidalgo County District Attorney continue taking and giving shots just days before next week's election.
Challenger Ricardo Rodriguez could not attend a forum Thursday. He instead attended a funeral. While that left incumbent Rene Guerra unopposed at the forum, that didn't mean he didn't get on the defensive.
Audience members peppered him with questions about why he didn't pursue charges in the infamous Irene Garza death. The audience also asked why he advised Sheriff Lupe Treviño to not return campaign money donated by an indicted drug trafficker.
"Now I told him, 'deposit the money, make a paper trail, return the money, and that's the only evidence where you're going to know that that person didn't pocket the money or later on you're going to be accused of a crime,'" Guerra said. "That was my advice and I'd advise all the candidates to do the same thing."
The family of Irene Garza was on hand to question Guerra about his decision to not pursue charges against a suspect.
Guerra later said Rodriguez didn't show up because he was chickening out of the debate.
