A reminder tax filing deadline around the corner
BROWNSVILLE, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — You've got some time, but not much, the tax deadline for the 2013 tax season is just a week away, Na'Tassia Finley has reminders for last minute filers.
It's not quite time to panic, but if you let the remaining days get away from you, you may find yourself in some trouble.
Tuesday will mark the 2013 tax season deadline, Lupe Hernandez, Volunteer tax preparer, "Some people think just cause they don't make enough money they don't have to file, but it's to their advantage to file because they'll get the Earned Income Credit."
So far, between the nine sites and four high schools, which have provided free tax prep assistance through United Way's service, over $3 million dollars have been awarded in Earned Income Credit to lower residents.
Of course, the faster these preparers can get the money into clients pockets, the better, Lupe Hernandez, "They get it seven to ten days, so it's a lot faster if they do E-file."
At the ITEC Vita site, tax preparers say business is actually slowing down even though the deadline is nearing. Over the next few days it'll likely be the self employed who are coming in to file and usually those who own money to Uncle Sam, but if you're still not ready to officially file your taxes, Rosie Gomez, Volunteer tax preparer, "You can always get an extension. We have the ability to send in claims if that's what they're looking for."
Gomez notes though, if you thing you might owe, be prepared to send a check with an estimated payment to the IRS.
If you are one of the last minute filers who qualify for the free tax prep assistance service offered by United Way, because things have started slowing down, they are taking walk-ins during this final week.
