8,420: that's the record number of students the University of Texas at Brownsville is reporting for this fall semester.

"We believe some of the reasons students select UTB," said Dr. Sylvia Leal, Vice President of Enrollment Management at UTB. "Number one, it's close to home, number two, because it's a quality education associated with the U-T...University of Texas system, and because it's an affordable option for your university."

And because this is the first time UTB has really checked its numbers since its split from TSC, the university set its own goals for enrollment.

Because this is UTB's first year as a stand-alone campus, this is the first opportunity school administrators have had to analyze their enrollment goals. And so far, they've beaten their goal by 1,000 students.

And administrators are hoping these numbers mean a better and brighter future for students.

"I think the opportunity gives students an opportunity to interact with each other, learn from each other, I think having more students in a classroom...it's really not...we're not at a huge university where you have hundreds of students on campus, so I think it's still very small and very manageable," said Dr. Leal.

And not only more students, but more students being helped with higher education at UTB.

"along with enrolling our 8000 students, we've award 60..63 million dollars in financial aid to about 5,700 students here on our campus. And that's a great opportunity for our students," said Dr. Leal.
