Raccoons Maul Baby
Mother says animals broke into house; investigators believe they may have been pets.
A 9-month-old baby is recovering after two raccoons attacked her in her crib inside her Newton County, Georgia home.
The child's mother said the noise from the attack woke her up.
The baby is listed in critical condition in an Atlanta hospital.
She suffered injuries to her head, face and hands.
Deputies responded to the home when the 911 call came in.
They shot one of the raccoons as it ran away.
Animal control officers later captured the other raccoon.
It tested negative for rabies.
Investigators are now looking into how the animals got into the home.
It appears they gained access through a window, but authorities are also looking into whether the family was raising the raccoons as pets.
If that is the case, charges would likely follow.
According to the Department of Natural Resources keeping wild animals without a permit is illegal.
