A Cameron county jury decided life in prison is the punishment suitable for 31 year-old Efrain Puente.
The same jury found him guilty this week of stabbing a man to death last year. The verdict was devastating to his wife, Teresa Puente, so much that paramedics had to be called to examine her. She says the jury made the wrong decision in the sentencing of her husband.
The jury took all morning to decide that the murder is not a case of a crime of passion and sentenced Puente to life in prison. Cameron county District Attorney spokesperson, Jason Moody, says Puente will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years. The DA's office is pleased with the sentencing because it sends a clear message that crimes like these will not be tolerated.
