The Brownsville City Commission has made another change to the plan to increase parking meter rates in the downtown area.

On Tuesday, the city council, threw out the three year plan to change the rate from 20 cents to 75 cents an hour at meters. Instead, they are now thinking about making the rate 50 cents an hour. However, that's not the only change they made to the plan.

“We were going to create a revitalization fund. Instead the funds are now going into the general fund, but downtown will have a priority. We're going to try to figure it out and write it back into the ordinance,” said Ramiro Gonzalez from Brownsville Planning.

Under the newly proposed plan, parking meter funds will fund the city, instead of going into a fund to improve Downtown Brownsville. The second and final vote is scheduled for the first week in April. At that time, there will be opportunity for the public to speak.
