Proposal In Lights

High-school sweetheart uses Christmas light display to pop the question.

'Tis a month before Christmas and up on the roof, the neighbors must think that the homeowner goofed.

While holiday greetings light up most people's nights, here a wedding proposal flashes in lights.

"I have a lot of hare brained schemes," said Joe Choiniere.

Joe planned the surprise, a romantic gesture that brought tears to the eyes of Dana Johnson, his high school sweetheart. He knew it was time for their future to start.

"I was shocked, completely shocked...I couldn't believe it. I read it a couple of times before I could process it," said Dana .

After seven years dating, Joe had to confess, he had a pretty good inkling the answer would be yes.

With the front yard aglow with lights all around, Joe had to wait with one knee on the ground, with family and friends not knowing how long they'd linger, Dana wound up with a ring on her finger.

"I sat there for a good 15 or 20 seconds, kneeling on the ground before she actually said, 'yes,'" Joe recalled.

"It was on the roof in a 15-foot sign, not what I was expecting," Dana said.

Dana never thought she'd receive such a gift, a lifelong dream and a spiritual lift. And Joe got to prove with his unconventional antic, at heart, he's nothing but an old time romantic.

I asked Dana if this is what she envisioned.

"No, it's better. It couldn't be more perfect," she said.

"I've always had a big Christmas light display, but I figure I'd put two things I love together, my Dana and Christmas lights. This is what I came up with," Joe said.

Joe says it took him parts of five days to set up all the displays.

For obvious reasons, the "Marry Me Dana" lights went up last.

The happy couple has not yet set a wedding date.
