MISSION, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — An upper Valley priest is being called to court for allegedly ringing the church bells too loud.
Father Roy Snipes of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church is accused of being a public nuisance--that's what one nearby neighbor is claiming.
He says the church bells are ringing too loudly, and has complained to Father Roy several times asking him to turn down the bells. Father Roy has done what the man has asked, but he refuses to completely silence the church bells.
The church has been under construction for the last year and a half, so Mass is being held across the street at a smaller building. The bells were moved from the original tower to the temporary facility months ago, but it's only recently that the neighbor's complaints started coming in.
"We would like to be good neighbors to him, but not if it means letting him turn our bells down or to tell us how to run the bells," said Father Roy. "We wouldn't want to do that, and we wouldn't want to tell him how to run his barbeque pit either, or drink his beer, or whatever. It's a free country."
Father Roy will go to municipal court tomorrow to find out if the church must pay a fine for the public nuisance complaint.
