Specialists say Mexico is big part of the problem
It's considered the nation's fastest growing drug problem. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is calling it an epidemic and there seems to be no end in sight.
"People don't know about it because it sneaks up on them," said David Heckman, Alcohol & Drug Counselor. "The pain pill doesn't work today, let's take another one."
Heckman says opiate based medications are extremely addictive and its easy for people to fall victim. He says people don't want to admit their addictions and that's where the problem starts.
Prescription drugs are helpful to millions of people who suffer from chronic pain but not following instructions on the bottle is whats getting people in trouble. Another contributing factor is availability. Specialists in the valley say Mexico is big part of the problem.
Heckman says he's treated a few cases but that doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist here in the valley.
Even though prescription drugs can be your powerful ally at times, it also poses serious health risks which can ultimately lead to addiction or death.
