A secondary bridge to cross onto South Padre Island is a hot topic. This week there will be a public forum to discuss future plans for such a bridge.
We found out there are some mixed emotions about having another bridge going over to South Padre Island. The Queen Isabella Causeway runs from Port Isabel to South Padre Island, and it's the only way to the Island.
"A lot of traffic and takes a long time to cross the bridge."
Mariam Case is a long time resident of Port Isabel and is ready for another bridge.
The SPI mayor says that one route for the proposed bridge what start at Holly Beach in Laguna Vista, go across the bay, and end two miles north of South Padre Island. The mayor says the bridge would create a loop effect where a car could enter the south end and leave on the north relieving traffic and making evacuations easier.
It's still unknown how much the project would cost, but it could reach up near the $500 million dollar mark. There are talks of having a toll bridge to pay for most of it.
On Thursday a public forum will be held at Port Isabel High School.
There the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority and Tex-Dot will discuss future plans for the bridge.
It still has to go through an environmental and feasibility study before anything could be approved. The mayor says it will take at least two years for construction to get underway, if it is given a green light.
