Brownsville ISD students return to the classroom Monday, but not every student has the supplies needed.

School supplies are not cheap, and sometimes financial strain at home means kids show up without supplies on the first day of classes.

"There's a need in the city of Brownsville for the children who are going to school that may not, their parents may not be able to buy these school supplies that are needed at the beginning of the school year."

That's where the Brownsville Police Departments and it's partners step in Friday Capital One Bank, HEB, and Valley Dental Associates along with the Brownsville

Explorers were on hand stuffing backpacks with school supplies for 500 elementary schools will pre-select the students who will receive the backpacks.

"the idea behind giving the backpacks away is so the children will see the police department in a different light. Sometimes the children will only see us when there's a problem in the household or these are areas that we need to go and deal with. So this is a way for these kids to see us in a different light. We're here to help out also."
